Library Steps Landscape Enhancements, Downtown Los Angeles

Library Steps Landscape Enhancements, Downtown Los Angeles

Ascending nearly sixty feet and gracefully connecting 5th and Hope Streets in Downtown Los Angeles, the "Library Steps" were originally designed by Lawrence Halrpin. Constructed in 1989, the composition is reminiscent of Rome's Spanish Steps.

The Steps, water features and landscape were conceived together with Robert Maguire's iconic highrise US Bank tower and designed simultaneously by Henry Cobb of Pei, Cobb, Freed Partners. Sited at the top of the steps is the civic sculpture "Source Figure" by Robert Graham. At the request of the Maguire Asset Management Team, Mr. Bennitt has provided on going consulting services for the water feature renovation as well as a new more regionally appropriate planting scheme. The focus has been to create a more authentically appropriate California Native Plant Palette that minimizes water consumption and that promotes more sustainable horticultural practices.
